Learn Sword Dance

Can I learn the Sword Dance? Where can I learn Highland Dancing as an adult? Both questions Highland Hustle has been asked and so we think we have a solution.

As many of you know, Highland Hustle takes inspiration from Highland movements in a way that the class is accessible for everyone.  But, a normal Hustle class does not involve a full Highland Fling for example. Some non dancers who come into our classes want to know a bit more about traditional Highland so this solution is perfect for them too.

The Community Members site currently has a video for complete beginners to learn the first step of the Sword Dance in a step by step, low impact way … perfect for an adult who wants to know how to do it!

The challenge is around 8 minutes long and builds up step by step from learning a Pas De Basque to dancing the first step.  We have even provided a swords template you can print out to dance around and to help you know which Sword to move to next!  You can pause and replay any parts you need more time with so you learn at your own rate.

This video is not aimed at children who want to learn Highland Dancing and doesn’t go into technical details … a skilled Highland Dance teacher will do that!  Perfecting the Sword Dance literally takes years and years of dedication, practice and patience - just watch the video of 2017 World Champion Rebecca Thow performing the Sword Dance as an example on the Community Members site and you will see what we mean!

However, this challenge is set to be a bit of fun and who knows … you could use it as your Hogmany party piece, do it together on New Years day for a bit of fun with the family  or learn and practice it for Burns Night in January.   It might even strike up a passion to know more or inspire a family member to get along to a Highland Dance class.

The content is available to all Community Members, for a limited time only as content changes with different challenges every wee while.

The Community Members area is available to everyone worldwide and you will have access immediately with a FREE 7 day trial.  If it is not for you, just cancel before the 7 days and you will not be charged.  You can cancel at any time and there are different payment options from one month (£4), to six months (£22) or  a year (£40) which is £3.33 per month!  Prices are in sterling but will be converted at time of payment.

Looking forward to hearing how you all get on and why not share your photos and videos with us as we love to see them!

Thanks also to Rebecca for agreeing to have her performance posted on the site too.
